Rascal came to us after being hit by a car. His only injury was a broken leg. His owner was a single mother with 2 kids who worked 3 jobs and couldn’t afford his care. We didn’t have the heart to euthanize this little guy, so we had her sign him over to us. So we splinted his leg and scheduled surgery to have it pinned.
Unfortunately, his first surgery was unsucessful and he had to have the pin removed and have multiple pins placed.
He came out of the second surgery and seemed to have nerve damage in that leg. He just dragged it and made no effort to place his foot at all. We were afraid it would have to be amputated.
Thats when I began to bring him home with me so he could get out of the kennel and we could do physical therapy on that leg.
He and Jak got along great and seemed to really enjoy each other’s company.
Rascal made himself right at home. I was surprised how well behaved he was in the house. He was potty trained and crate trained. The only bad habit he had was trying to destroy Jak’s toys.
I wanted to try hydrotherapy with Rascal. So I went and bought him a lifejacket and swam him the the bathtub for a few minutes every night for a little over a month.
Oliver was his swim coach.
The hydrotherapy worked wonders for him.
Rascal has made an amazing recovery. He now uses his leg wondefully. He places his foot and runs and plays. He still has a slightly abnormal gait, but he’s lucky he will get to keep his leg. He only skips on it when he goes fast. He’s a very bright little dog. We also worked on basic commands and he learned sit, down, shake and roll over in a matter of hours.
Rascal has not been adopted yet because he still needs one more surgery to remove the pins in this leg. But once he recovers from that I’m confident that he will quickly find a wonderful home. He is a great little dog and will make a wonderful addition to the right family.
